GIBBI, Today
In this newsletter I write the 5 most important news that I read in the day about businesses, media and sports in México and in the World.
Stories:
Pogacar wins Tour de France 2025
MLB Hall of Fame 2025 Inductees
England win UEFA Women’s Euro 2025
Bayer, Liverpool Agree Deal for Luis Díaz
Donovan signs multi-year extension with Bulls
Pogacar wins Tour de France 2025 (BBC)
Wout van Aert denied Tadej Pogacar a prestigious win on the final stage of this year's Tour de France as the Slovenian secured his fourth Tour title
Pogacar has also become the first reigning world road champion to win the Tour since Greg LeMond in 1990 and also secured the King of the Mountains title for a third time
Final general clasiffication standings:
Tadej Pogacar (Slo/UAE Emirates-XRG) 76hrs 32secs
Jonas Vingegaard (Den/Visma-Lease a Bike) +4mins 24secs
Florian Lipowitz (Ger/Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) +11mins
GIBBI View: Pogacar is one Tour de France title away to tie the most title in this tournament (Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, Indurain), where seeing his dominance and his young age I wouldn’t doubt that Pogacar could win more than 5 Tour de France titles and make history, but just the time will tell you if Pogacar will make history, let’s see
MLB Hall of Fame 2025 Inductees (ESPN)
Ichiro Suzuki became the first Japanese-born player to be enshrined into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, one of five new members of baseball's hallowed institution
After enduring the baseball tradition known as a rain delay, the five speeches went off without a hitch as the deluge subsided and the weather became hot and humid. Joining Suzuki were pitchers CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner, and sluggers Dick Allen and Dave Parker, both of whom were enshrined posthumously
When Hall voting was announced, Suzuki fell one vote shy of becoming the second unanimous selection for the Hall. He thanked the writers for their support, with an exception
GIBBI View: In this list, I could only watch Ichiro and CC Sabathia and both of them played with my favorite team Yankees; Ichiro is the best japanese baseball players to play in MLB, but I think this won’t last a lot because Ohtani will take that title when he retires
England win UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 (BBC)
England cemented their place in history with a stunning penalty-shootout victory over Spain to retain their European title at Euro 2025
Chloe Kelly, who scored the iconic winner at Wembley in the final of Euro 2022, was the hero again as she converted the decisive spot-kick to seal victory after Spain had missed three in a row, with Hannah Hampton saving two of them
England will return home to a heroes' welcome and enjoy their victory, with a celebration expected to take place in London. Manager Wiegman is under contract until the 2027 World Cup where they will hope to complete unfinished business
GIBBI View: England took revenge of what happened two years ago, whe Spain defeated England in FIFA World Cup 2023 Final, and also when last year Spain defeated England in Men’s Euro 2024 Final; Spain was the best team yesterday but they couldn’t score the goals to win the game, and England did enough to force the penalty shootouts and win the game and the championship
Bayer, Liverpool Agree Deal for Luis Díaz (BBC)
Luis Díaz is set to join Bayern Munich after the German champions agreed a deal worth 75m euros (£65.5m) including add-ons with Liverpool
Liverpool rejected an initial bid of £58.6m from Bayern for the Colombia forward earlier this month
Liverpool have signed forwards Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike already this summer and are interested in Newcastle United's Alexander Isak
GIBBI View: Bayern needed to go to the market and buy a top winger, after the Jamal Musiala’s injury that suffered in FIFA Club World Cup last month; so I think that Díaz won’t be in the starting lineup but he will help to enter the pitch in the second half
Donovan signs multi-year extension with Bulls (NBC Sports)
The deal is done, Donovan signed a multi-year extension, a story broken by ESPN’s Shams Charania and confirmed by Bulls PR
Donovan has a 195-205 record across five seasons coaching the Bulls, and he led them to the playoffs once (a first-round exit at the hands of the Bucks in 2022). The past three seasons, the Bulls have not advanced past the play-in tournament
DeRozan and LaVine are gone, and the Bulls are betting Donovan is the coach to help them transition to what’s next. Last season, Donovan attempted to change things up, pushing for a faster tempo, which worked with the arrival of Josh Giddey (who is at his best in open space)
GIBBI View: I don’t have anything against coach Billy Donovan, but how is possible that Bulls extended his contract when he has a losing record and Bulls have only qualified to playoffs only one time since he’s coaching the team; so maybe for that reason Bulls haven’t made to Eastern Conference Finals since Jordan retired
