2025 US Open begins (GIBBI’s Editorial Staff)
The tournament starts today and will run until Sunday, September 07th in New York City, New York; this is the 4th and last Grand Slam of the year (Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open)
Jannik Sinner (men’s) and Aryna Sabalenka (women’s) won 2024 US Open tournament, and both players are the favorites to repeat titles
This year in Men’s, Jannik Sinner won Australian Open and Wimbledon, and Carlos Alcaraz won Roland Garros; in Women’s, Madison Keys won Australian Open, Coco Gauff won Rolando Garros and Iga Swiatek won Wimbledon
GIBBI View: Last month US Open announced that they will offer the largest purse in tennis history at $90 million in total prices, where men’s and women’s singles champions will each earn $5 million at this year’s tournament, a 39% increase on the $3.6 million awarded in 2024
Meta partners with Midjourney (Tech Crunch)
Meta is partnering with Midjourney to license the startup’s AI image and video generation technology, Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang announced Friday in a post on Threads. Wang says Meta’s research teams will collaborate with Midjourney to bring its technology into future AI models and products
The Midjourney partnership could help Meta develop products that compete with industry-leading AI image and video models, such as OpenAI’s Sora, Black Forest Lab’s Flux, and Google’s Veo
The licensing agreement with Midjourney marks Meta’s latest deal to get ahead in the AI race. Earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg went on a hiring spree for AI talent, offering some researchers compensation packages worth upwards of $100 million
GIBBI View: Meta has invested a lot in “poached” several workers to its AI division with the goal to create the best AI products and try to win the AI race, but I still see Meta so far away from another AI companies like OpenAI, xAI, Perplexity, etc; about this news, remember that I want to create a AI Translation App where this could be integrate in these smart glasses
Canva valued at $42B ahead of possible IPO (PitchBook)
Design software company Canva has launched a share sale program, which values it at $42 billion ahead of a potential IPO
Founded in 2012, Sydney-based Canva’s online design and publishing tool is used in 190 countries with over 240 million monthly active users and around $3 billion in annualized revenue
The number of shares to be sold was undisclosed, but previous reports stated that the company was looking to sell up to $500 million worth
GIBBI View: It looks that startups are seeing that now it’s a great time to make an IPO because the stock market is in the best way possible in 3 years, so Canva wants to follows startups like Figma and Klarna that made an IPO this year
Meta unveils Hypernova smart glasses with display (CNBC)
Meta is planning to use its annual Connect conference next month to announce a deeper push into smart glasses, including the launch of the company’s first consumer-ready glasses with a display, CNBC has learned
That’s one of the two new devices Meta is planning to unveil at the event, according to people familiar with the matter. The company will also launch its first wristband that will allow users to control the glasses with hand gestures, the people said
Meta and Ray-Ban have sold 2 million pairs of their second-generation glasses since 2023, Luxottica CEO Francesco Milleri said in February. In July, Luxottica said that revenue from sales of the smart glasses had more than tripled year over year.
GIBBI View: I’ve a prediction that smart glasses will become the next smartphones in the next 5+ years from now, and in this field Meta is leading the market and maybe it can become the Apple’s smart glasses because Meta is the company that most has invested in this field
Waymo can now test its self-driving vehicles in NYC (Engadget)
Waymo can now test its self-driving cars in New York City, Mayor Eric Adams has announced. Local authorities have granted the company the permit needed to be able to test autonomous vehicles in parts of Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn
Waymo will be able to deploy a fleet with up to eight vehicles in the city until late September 2025. For now, though, the permit only allows Waymo to test its AVs with drivers behind the wheel
The company announced earlier this year that it was going to test its driverless system in 10 new cities in 2025. In June, it filed a request for permission to test its AVs in New York City in hopes that it can someday bring its autonomous ride-hailing service to the Big Apple
GIBBI View: Waymo now has offered its self-driving vehicles services in US cities like Phoenix, Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, Los Ángeles and now New York City; by the way, remember that I’ve in mind to create a carsharing startup, to connect people that want to rent their car to people that need to rent a car
