NBA makes China comeback in Macau (Reuters)
The National Basketball Association (NBA) returned to China on Thursday for the first time since a controversial parting of ways in 2019, staging two games in Macau and announcing a multi-year partnership with Chinese technology giant Alibaba
The Macau games aim to bolster the NBA’s profile in China, where around 300 million people play basketball, at a time of rising political tensions between the United States and China
The NBA’s absence followed a firestorm of controversy around comments made six years ago by the Houston Rockets’ then general manager Daryl Morey, who posted a message on social media in support of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests
GIBBI View: China represents the second biggest market for NBA, after U.S., and for that reason it was very important for NBA to make the peace with China and return to play there
LeBron James will miss NBA season opener (MARCA)
LeBron James won’t be on the court when the Los Angeles Lakers start their season later this month. The 40-year-old star has been diagnosed with sciatica, an issue that will keep him out for at least three to four weeks, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania
The pain is reportedly on his right side and comes after a difficult offseason filled with rehab. James spent the summer recovering from a left knee MCL sprain suffered during last year’s playoffs. He was already limited at the start of training camp because of nerve irritation in his glute, which forced him to sit out several practices
James’ recent injuries have raised new questions about how much longer he can play at a high level. The four-time MVP and four-time NBA champion is entering his 23rd season and has played more than 66,000 combined minutes in his career - regular season and playoffs included
GIBBI View: I think that is a load management that Lebron and Lakers have agreed, so Lebron James can be in the best way possible when the playoffs start in april 2026, because now that Luka Doncic is in the team Lebron can rest some games and Lakers will win the games (probably); I think that Lebron is looking for to win his 5th NBA title and he’s trying to be as healthy as possible in playoffs
Netflix is letting users play games on their TV screens (TechCrunch)
Starting this week, Netflix subscribers can play games on their smart TV, a feature that has been in the works for some time. Reports about Netflix’s efforts to bring its mobile games to televisions began in early 2023. Later that year, the company launched a game controller app for iOS devices
Since launching mobile games four years ago, Netflix’s strategy has been somewhat varied. However, the recent move indicates a more serious commitment to expanding its gaming offerings, helping it compete more directly with major video game companies, beyond just mobile gaming rivals
Alongside the announcement, Netflix revealed the new slate of games it’s launching, all of which are party titles meant to be played in groups: Boggle Party, LEGO Party!, Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends, Pictionary: Game Night & Tetris Time Warp
GIBBI View: It’s been a very busy year for Netflix, where Netflix has done several acquisitions to try to offer the best product to bring more subscribers and increase its revenues; this year Netflix added tv media rights for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 & 2031 in U.S. and Canadá, the tv media rights for 2026 WBC in Japan, and Netflix will bid for Champions League games in U.K.; also Netflix teamed up with NASA, is creating a netflix series with Mark Rober, and invested $1 billion in Churubusco Studios in México
Polymarket founder now youngest self-made billionaire (Yahoo Finance)
Shayne Coplan, the founder and CEO of premier prediction market Polymarket, is the youngest self-made billionaire at 27-years-old, according to Bloomberg. Coplan’s ascent comes after Polymarket was valued at $9 billion following a $2 billion investment from the NYSE owner, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE)
Polymarket has become one of the decade’s most successful crypto apps by allowing users to easily place bets on the outcomes of real-world events, such as the U.S. presidential election. As a result, it has processed $18.1 billion worth of trading volume and attracted 1.3 million unique users, according to Dune data
“The past two years have been surreal. Going from a write-off to creating a category, watching our vision become a reality,” Coplan posted on X, in reaction to the ICE investment. “If I learned one thing, it’s that bold ideas are everywhere, hidden in plain sight. It just takes someone crazy enough to spend their life willing it into existence”
GIBBI View: Everytime that I read this kind of news it gives me more motivation to continue working in my projects and believe in what I’m doing, because in this moment I’m working in create content in this blog and in my social media platforms (youtube, spotify), later to create my digital newspaper and finally my media company; by the way, remember that my biggest goal is to create my SuperApp where I can integrate all of my apps
OpenAI’s Sora has already hit more than 1 million downloads (The Verge)
OpenAI’s social AI video-generating app, Sora, has reached over 1 million downloads in fewer than five days since its launch. That’s according to Sora head Bill Peebles, who said on Wednesday that Sora racked up downloads faster than ChatGPT did at launch despite being an invite-only app
The company launched its new Sora app for iOS on September 30th, giving users the ability to scroll through a feed of AI-generated videos, as well as create ones of their own using OpenAI’s new Sora 2 model
Already, the Sora app has sparked backlash after users began generating copyrighted characters in circumstances far from brand-friendly, leading OpenAI to give those copyright holders more control over their content. The company has started letting users specify how their likeness is used in Sora as well
GIBBI View: We’re waiting that AI startups can reach AGI and instead these AI startups are creating AI B2B products/features, so maybe we’re so far to reach AGI that these companies are telling us; I have a prediction that we’re going to reach AGI in 15 years from now
