NFL Wants to Play on a Record Fifth Continent (Front Office Sports)
The NFL is intent on playing a regular-season game on a fifth continent in the near future, as the league’s international expansion goals continue to grow
“If you are going to be global, you have to do it beyond Europe, and beyond the Americas. You need to reach into other areas and territories,” Goodell said at the Leaders in Sports conference Thursday. “And next year we’re going to Australia. We have plans to go to Asia shortly thereafter”
When the Rams host a to-be-determined opponent in Melbourne next season, it will mark the fourth continent on which the NFL has played a regular-season game. Asia has been casually mentioned by Goodell and other league executives in recent years, but no specific timeline, cities, or countries under consideration have been given
GIBBI View: The most probably is that NFL will play 8 international games next season, because Goodell confirmed that NFL is going to return México next year, and Rams will play in Sydney, Australia next year (the most probably against Chargers), where the goal is to play 16 games per season, so let’s see
OpenAI acquires an AI-powered personal investing app (Engadget)
Just a day after dethroning SpaceX as the most valuable private company in the world, OpenAI has acquired another startup. This time, the AI giant acquired Roi, an app that offers a one-stop shop for all your financial portfolios and an AI chatbot that provides personalized investing advice
OpenAI could be leaning into an AI chatbot that provides more than just responses to general queries and offers more personalization as a “proactive assistant,” as detailed in its blog post introducing Pulse
In May, the company acquired io, an AI hardware startup cofounded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion. OpenAI followed up that major purchase by spending another $1.1 billion to acquire Statsig, a startup that focused on product testing, in September
GIBBI View: I think that OpenAI is leading the AI race, where OpenAI is offering the best AI products so far but other AI startups are trying to reach them; reading this news, it looks that with all this acquisitions, OpenAI wants to build a SuperApp, so let’s see
Bezos predicts that millions will live in space in ‘couple of decades’ (TechCrunch)
Speaking with John Elkann, a scion of Italy’s Agnelli dynasty, Bezos, who also founded rocket company Blue Origin, insisted people will be living in space “mostly because they want to,” and that robots will handle the grunt work, while vast AI data centers float overhead
The pronouncement sounds a little like Bezos trying to one-up his space rival. Elon Musk has spent years predicting humans will colonize Mars and suggested a million people could live there by 2050, which is right around the corner, basically. Maybe both gazillionaires are losing touch, or else they know something the rest of us refreshing Zillow do not
“There has never been a better time to be excited about the future,” he reportedly said, as audience members (in our imagination) exchanged uncertain glances across the Turin auditorium
GIBBI View: This is an ego problem between two of the wealthiest people in the world, where I think that both ideas/goals are realistics but if I had to bet in the near future (5 to 10 years) I’d bet for Bezos’ vision, and if I’d to bet in the long future (10+ years) I’d bet for Musk’ vision, so let’s see what the future is preparing to the humanity
Cathy Engelbert Says She Won’t Step Down Amid WNBA Labor Strife (Sportico)
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said Friday she has no plans on leaving her post amid a collective bargaining standoff and heavy criticism from players, media and fans in recent days
Her comments come after Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier accused the league’s top executive of being negligent on issues related to officiating, compensation and the overall state of the league
Reestablishing trust with the players may be difficult before a new accord is struck. While Engelbert maintained she wants the same things as the players in terms of salary increases and better benefits, she said she must also consider the league itself as it looks to become profitable
GIBBI View: I think that there’s a lack of leadership in both sides (commissioner/owners and players) because their ego, and in the same time this is an important moment (tipping point) in WNBA that both sides need to take it because it’s going to improve and change the WNBA forever, so let’s see what’s going to happen in the near future
