GIBBI, Today
In this newsletter I write the 5 most important news that I read in the day about businesses, media and sports in México and in the World.
Stories:
Cruz Azul vs Santos
Transit tech startup Via files for IPO
Barca overtakes the NBA on YouTube
OpenAI in talks to sell $6B in stock at $500B valuation
NBA trims back-to-back games before Big National Contests
Cruz Azul vs Santos (GIBBI’s Editorial Staff)
Tonight at 19:00 ET on Olímpico Universitario Stadium (México City, México)
Cruz Azul: 5th place with 8 points (2-2-0 record)
Santos: 7th place with 6 points (2-0-2 record)
My Prediction:
Cruz Azul win by 2+ goals difference
GIBBI View: Around the week it was known that Piovi will leave Cruz Azul to be sgined by Inter Miami, so until the moment I’m writting this newsletter there’s not confirmation about if Piovi will leave the team or will play; Santos have been one of the surprise of the tournament because they’ve gotten 70% of the points that they got last tournament
Transit tech startup Via files for IPO (PitchBook)
Transit technology startup Via has filed to go public on the NYSE, the latest sign that more founders are warming up to an IPO
Via, which sells software for public transportation systems, has narrowed its losses over the past year but is still operating in the red. It posted a net loss of $90 million for the year ending December 2024, up from $116 million in 2023. Via did not disclose an IPO price range in its S-1 filing
Its upcoming debut will come more than three years after it first confidentially filed to go public in late 2021. Via later withdrew from the process, citing macroeconomic uncertainty
GIBBI View: Exactly one month ago, I wrote here that Via filed for IPO but until yesterday it was confirmed this information; by the way, remember that in the beginning of the year I was working in a similar startup that I called it GIBBI Carsharing, a carsharing app
Barca overtakes the NBA on YouTube (MARCA)
FC Barcelona became the most followed sports club on YouTube last January, overtaking clubs such as Real Madrid and Liverpool
This summer, due in large part to the Asian tour, Barça managed to overtake the only sports organisations that were ahead of them: FIFA and the NBA. The club led by Joan Laporta took first place thanks to the 23.8 million subscriptions to its account
The club's commitments in Asia during pre-season increased the number of users on YouTube, but not without controversy. Initially, Barça offered its pre-season matches from Barça One, free of charge if users were registered
GIBBI View: The european “soccer” teams are the most followed teams in the world, and it’s very difficult that NFL, NBA & MLB can compete against them because soccer is global and american sports are just played and interested in in U.S. and México, so for that reason american sports leagues have decided to play games outside U.S.
OpenAI in talks to sell $6B in stock at $500B valuation (CNBC)
OpenAI is preparing to sell around $6 billion in stock as part of a secondary sale that would value the company at roughly $500 billion, CNBC confirmed Friday
The shares would be sold by current and former employees to investors including SoftBank, Dragoneer Investment Group and Thrive Capital, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who asked not to be named due to the confidential nature of the discussions
The company announced a $40 billion funding round in March at a $300 billion, by far the largest amount ever raised by a private tech company. Earlier this month, OpenAI announced its most recent $8.3 billion in fresh capital tied to that funding round
GIBBI View: It’s been a very busy year for OpenAI, especially the last month, where in the end of last month OpenAI launched Study Mode in ChatGPT, and last week OpenAI launched GPT-5 model to all users and OpenAI’s Startup Fund raised $69.5M for 6th SPV
NBA trims back-to-back games before Big National Contests (Front Office Sports)
The NBA announced its full 2025–26 season schedule Thursday. Aside from the entry of the league’s new broadcast partners, the schedule also showed an incremental, and perhaps negligible, change as the league tries to combat load management
For the upcoming season, NBA teams will average 14.4 back-to-back sets, which are when teams play games on two consecutive days. The number is down slightly from 14.9 last season. No team will play more than 16 back-to-backs, while a handful of teams will play just 13
The marginal uptick, though, is likely due to the NBA’s strategy with timing. In an effort to ensure the availability of stars for national games, the NBA’s schedule ensures there will be no back-to-backs for teams participating in these games: Opening week national TV games, NBA Cup, Christmas, MLK Day four-game national lineup, ABC Saturday (10 games), ABC Sunday (8 games), NBC Sunday (11 games)
GIBBI View: It can’t be possible that NBA has to do this kind of adjustments so players can play in the most important games in regular season; I think that in NBA is the only sport where players apply the famous “load management” because in the rest of sports players want to play all the games, unbelievable
